If you’re one of the 62% of households that own their home, you might be wondering how you can improve your home and make it your own. Whether you’ve just moved in or are finally starting to tick some home improvements off your to-do list, we’ve rounded up the DIY trends 2024 has to offer.

Why are DIY trends important?

You might be wondering why it’s so important to look at the home design trends but the idea is simple. While some interior design principles never go out of style, it’s a good idea to follow trends so you can continue adding value to your home. If you’re doing the work yourself, following trends is relatively easy as you can simply tweak your interiors in line with the latest trends.

With this being said, having the right tools is important. By investing in equipment from leading brands such as Milwaukee Tools, you’ll be able to experiment with DIY projects in your home and complete the job with ease.

Some of the trends from previous years should not be ignored, such as biophilic design principles with indoor plants and the use of natural materials, and sustainability and eco-friendly should always be key to your decision making.

Considering clutter is the biggest cause of arguments in the home, embrace the minimalism aesthetic this year. Especially with high demand for a home office with the popularity of remote work, so think multifunctional furniture with storage solutions.

Home Trends to try in 2024

Wooden cabinets

While wooden cabinets were a no-go once upon a time, they’ve come back into fashion. Adding warmth and texture to a space and inspired by Scandinavian living design, wooden cabinets are set to be huge this year.

Earthy mid and darker tones hues are timeless and feel much fresher for longer compared to their white, glossy counterparts.

Another benefit of wooden cabinets is that you can easily paint them – making life easy should you decide to switch things up.

One of the easiest ways to refresh your bathroom or kitchen is to repaint the cabinets in there. All you need is the right paint and a bit of creativity.

Upcycling

Around 78% of the population wants to be more sustainable, so it’s no surprise that upcycling is on the list of trends for 2024. Not only is upcycling easier on the bank balance as you can pick up local gems from charity shops and rejuvenate them, it’s a fun pastime for any diyers!

Plus traditional craftmanship not only has vintage old-world charm, but it’s usually better made. If that isn’t enough, upcycling your furniture means you’ll be able to create unique pieces exactly to your taste.

The best bit is it’s great for the environment, as mixing and matching furniture pieces and styles can easily be overcome by using the same paint colour. So it’s reducing waste as well as adding sophistication to any room.

Reclaimed wood for shelving is a great example of natural materials and sustainability. Not only shelves great for display, it’s a useful extra storage option too for both the bedroom and living room. You can find many online tutorials on how to make shelves from driftwood and other sustainable materials.

Textile walls

While it might be to everybody’s taste, textile walls are set to be taking the interior design industry by storm in 2024 as a decorative element. Suitable for virtually every room, textile walls are an excellent way to add depth and texture to a space.

For period properties, dark sumptuous hues and luxurious textures and materials like velvet are a great way to add a touch of character to virtually any space. Not only are they more visually appealing than wallpaper, but they invoke multiple senses.

Smart Home

We live in a golden age of home automation which will continue in 2024, bringing further energy efficiency and more to our homes. Look out for AI technology improving existing smart devices, with video doorbells already recognising people who come to the door.

Other technology 2024 DIY trends are likely to be renewable energy related, with solar power becoming more compact and affordable to add ourselves.

Final thoughts…

Although it’s easy to shy away from interior design trends as they emerge, it’s worth taking note of the biophilia and minimalist approach to living. While not every trend is going to be your cup of tea, if one piques your interest, it’s worth exploring it. You never know, you might love the end result!

And of course some things are timeless, for example the right wall art can transform any living space and do not under estimate the power of the right lighting and mirrors on your home decor.
