For the first time in over three decades, the Grand Sumo Tournament is returning to the UK, offering an exclusive five-day basho (tournament) at the Royal Albert Hall on the 15 – 19th October 2025.
This prestigious event, organised in partnership with the Nihon Sumo Kyokai (Japan Sumo Association), brings Japan’s national sport back to London for a spectacle of power, tradition, and honour.
Why Sumo at the Royal Albert Hall?
The Grand Sumo Tournament London 2025 marks only the second time in history that a five-day sumo tournament has taken place outside Japan. The last event, held in 1991, was a ground-breaking success, drawing sold-out crowds and being broadcast to millions across the UK.
This year, Makuuchi rikishi (elite sumo wrestlers) from Japan’s top division will compete for the title of Grand Champion in a tournament blending athleticism and ancient ritual.
Sumo wrestling dates back over 1,500 years and has deep roots in Japanese culture. Each match is steeped in tradition, featuring a dohyō-iri (ring entrance ceremony) and symbolic rituals representing honour, respect, and perseverance.
